How are QUICKCOPY and library maintenance APPENDs handled by TRIM?

Both types of APPEND operations allow data to be appended to the end of an existing DMSII audit or library maintenance tape. In current Unisys software (MCP 8.0/49.1 and earlier), there is no way to capture these events from the MCP and there is no easy way to identify them.

On MCP 9.0, Unisys have provided two new additional log volume status entry records to allow 3rd-party software to detect APPEND operations. This will allow us to modify the creation date of an appended tape and re-apply TRIM rules. Metalogic will shortly be involved in field-testing of MCP 9.0 where this new facility will be reviewed.

Does TRIM support master-slave environments?

Yes. Both TCPIP and BNA environments are supported to a maximum network of 1 master and 8 slaves. The TP NET command allows easy setup of the master and slave environment. For example, to set up a TCPIP master system using port 44444:

      	TP NET TCPIP MASTER
			TP NET PORT 4444
			TP NET APPLY

For a slave to a TCPIP IP address (hostname is also permitted):

 	 	TP NET TCPIP SLAVE 192.168.0.10
		TP NET PORT 44444
		TP NET APPLY

Please see TAPELIBUPDATER DNote 480.06 for more information on the syntax of this TP NET command.

I'm changing DMSII levels, how do I upgrade the TRIM software?

Once you have migrated your DMSIII versions to the latest level, it is very straightforward to upgrade the TRIM database and associated tailored software. This may be done by using the Metalogic INSTALL utility, run under a privileged usercode passing the NEWDMS parameter e.g. from CANDE:

	U META/INSTALL NEWDMS

INSTALL will provide a confirmation screen, allowing the specification of DMSII software location and, if specified, usercode. The name of the DMSUPPORT library can also be changed here if desired.

During the upgrade, INSTALL will dump the existing database structures to a series of flat files (this simulates a TP DUMP command), and then re-compile the DASDL and thus the associated DMSII software. INSTALL will then re-compile the Metalogic OPALTAPELIB4 library, which is the only tailored Metalogic database application used for TRIM, and SL the codefile to the OPALTAPELIB function.

Lastly, the existing METATAPELIB4 database is re-initialized and INSTALL initiates a reload from the previously flat files dump.
